Diagnoses and immature stages of some AustralianTanytarsusvan der Wulp (Diptera: Chironomidae)

Abstract: Descriptions of immature stages and complete diagnoses of Tanytarsus barbitarsis Freeman, Tanytarsus fuscithorax Skuse, Tanytarsus semibarbitarsus Glover and Tanytarsus formosanus Kieffer as well as diagnoses of adult males of Tanytarsus nichollsi Glover, Tanytarsus subinextentus Glover, Tanytarsus inextentus Skuse, and Tanytarsus paskevillensis Glover are given. Tanytarsus dycei Glover is shown to be a synonym of Tanytarsus formosanus. All species are potential members of the Tanytarsus mendax, Tanytarsus gre… Show more

“…There are even species with larvae and pupae in marine or terrestrial environments[ 28 ]. The genus was erected by van der Wulp [ 29 ] and various species groups and regionally distributed species have been revised over the last few decades [ 30 – 37 ]. A morphological determination of some Tanytarsus species group can be extremely challenging.…”

“…The taxon has generally been referred to as Tanytarsus fuscithorax in Western Australian literature . In the present study however, the taxon has been referred to as Tanytarsus fuscithorax/semibarbitarsus because Ekrem (2001) suggested that the immatures of T. fuscithorax can easily be confused with those of T. semibarbitarsus and that the two are probably closely related. The species is common in permanent lentic waters throughout Australia (Edward 1986) and is known to inhabit shallow pools in the south-west of Western Australia .…”

“…The genus Tanytarsus was created by van der Wulp (1874) and species of Tanytarsus have been revised over the past decades (e.g. Cranston, 2000;Ekrem, 2001a;Ekrem, 2001b;Ekrem, 2002;Ekrem et al, 2003;Giłka & Paasivirta, 2009;Glover, 1973;Lin et al, 2018a;Reiss & Fittkau, 1971;Sanseverino, 2006;Sasa, 1980;Sasa, 1983;Sasa & Kawai, 1987), and their evolutionary history has been clarified recently by a molecular phylogenetic study based on multiple loci (Lin et al, 2018c). However, there remain challenges limiting the taxonomic disentangling of Tanytarsus in China: (a) there are still many poorly investigated regions, such as eastern Palearctic and Oriental regions; (b) life stages are incomplete as rearing is difficult; and (c) species boundaries remain uncertain in morphologically determined species.…”
