Diagnosing fibromyalgia in rheumatoid arthritis: The importance of assessing disease activity

Abstract: Objectives: This study aims to evaluate fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) incidence based on 2010 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and the association between FMS with disease activity, functional status and quality of life (QoL). Patients and methods:The study included 151 RA patients (32 males, 119 females; mean age 52.4±12.7 years; range 21 to 82 years) and 77 controls (13 males, 64 females; mean age 53.7±10.2 years; range 33 to 73 years). Individuals were clas… Show more

“…While Zammurrad et al found that all parameters used when calculating DAS28-S (4 parameters) were higher in RA patients with FM compared to those without FM, some studies found a difference only in terms of subjective parameters, as in to our study. 14 , 17 , 21…”

“…Rheumatoid factor was positive in 67.9% and 75.5% and anti-CCP was positive in 71.7% and 76.5% of the patients with or without FMS, respectively ( P > 0.05). [ 26 ] The current study indicates that there is no significant association between neurological manifestations in patients with RA and autoantibodies positivity. In some cases, but not all, the presence of ACPA and RF autoantibodies can be detected in the pathologic analysis of neurologic lesions in patients with RA.…”

“…In line with our findings, Bazzichi et al [6] showed that FM prevalence in RA patients is about 21%, with a range of 4.9-52.4%. In another study, Klçarslan et al [30] found that FM frequency was higher in patients with RA [35.1%] compared to the control group [19.5%].…”
