Diagnosing open-system magmatic processes using the Magma Chamber Simulator (MCS): part II—trace elements and isotopes

Abstract: The Magma Chamber Simulator (MCS) is a thermodynamic model that computes the phase, thermal, and compositional evolution of a multiphase–multicomponent system of a Fractionally Crystallizing resident body of magma (i.e., melt ± solids ± fluid), linked wallrock that may either be assimilated as Anatectic melts or wholesale as Stoped blocks, and multiple Recharge reservoirs (RnASnFC system, where n is the number of user-selected recharge events). MCS calculations occur in two stages; the first utilizes mass and … Show more

“…7b) (the compositions of the assimilants are given in the supplementary data). The assimilation was simulated using the magma chamber simulator (Bohrson et al 2014(Bohrson et al , 2020Heinonen et al 2019Heinonen et al , 2020, which is a thermodynamic model that calculates the evolution of a composite magmatic system and its fractionally crystallizing minerals. It also contains a number of sub-systems that control the thermodynamics and chemistry of magma recharge, assimilation, stoping, and accumulation of cumulates.…”

“…To evaluate the result of energy constrained interaction between serpentinite and basalt, we have performed Magma Chamber Simulator (MCS, Bohrson et al, 2014;Bohrson et al, 2020;Heinonen et al, 2020) modeling in the range from 0.1 to 0.5 GPa at condition of the magma saturation with H 2 O fluid (Supplementary Table S7). The MCS modeled liquid composition is in excellent agreement with that of the experimental felsic melts (Figures 5, 6).…”
