Diagnosis and Characterization of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Abstract: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can develop cirrhosis and even hepatocellular carcinoma, resulting in a high liver-related morbidity and mortality, being important to know those risk factors for disease progression, among which the presence of diabetes stands out. In addition, it is a disease with multisystemic behavior, becoming an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and extrahepatic tumors. Hence, early diagnosis and multidisciplinary management of NAFLD are really important. In this… Show more

“…Nevertheless, its potential morbimortality is not limited to the liver but goes beyond, since NAFLD has been considered a mediator of systemic diseases. 35 In fact, CVD is the leading cause of death among individuals with NAFLD. 29 Therefore, besides liver evaluation, non-invasive diagnostic and management CVR strategies in NAFLD patients are warranted.…”

“…In recent years, we have witnessed continuous progress in the non‐invasive diagnosis of NAFLD, including the application of different omics , to identify those patients at risk for developing advanced liver disease and liver‐related complications. Nevertheless, its potential morbimortality is not limited to the liver but goes beyond, since NAFLD has been considered a mediator of systemic diseases 35 . In fact, CVD is the leading cause of death among individuals with NAFLD 29 .…”
