Diagnosis and prognosis of congenital CMV infection: A case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the leading non-genetic cause of sensori-neural hearing loss and neurodevelopmental sequelae. Despite these alarming facts, the general public healthcare system is often not aware of CMV and not enough is done to prevent congenital CMV infection. We describe the clinical and laboratory monitoring of a case with primary CMV infection occurring before the first trimester of gestation. Specific literature review is included in order to point out major goals achieved in… Show more

“…HCMV reactivation in immunosuppressed patients manifests as an array of clinical syndromes including pneumonitis, hepatitis and colitis [ 14 ]. CMV infection of the central nervous system (CNS) and the retina are prominent features of immune-incompetence or severe immunosuppression, as occurs in neonates [ 15 – 17 ], untreated AIDS patients or patients who do not respond to HAART or discontinue therapy [ 18 ], and patients with haematological malignancies and graft versus host disease [ 19 – 21 ].…”

“…The annual numbers of HCMV-infected infants at birth based on viral shedding range from 35,000 in Brazil to 40,000 in the United States and 250,000 in India (5). In fact, persistent newborn medical conditions are more frequently associated with congenital HCMV infection than with other wellknown childhood diseases such as trisomy 21, spina bifida, or fetal-alcohol syndrome (2,4,(7)(8)(9)(10). Besides its leading role in permanent birth defects, HCMV is also a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplant recipients (11)(12)(13).…”
