Diagnosis, management, and follow-up of extensive dermoid cyst of the submental region

Abstract: Dermoid cyst (DC) is a cystic lesion of developmental origin and uncertain etiology that rarely affects the floor of the mouth. We report a case of a large lesion found in the submental and submandibular region in a 25-year-old male patient. Computed tomography revealed extensive hypodense lesion in the submental and submandibular space without peripheral enhancement. The microscopical analysis showed a cystic cavity lined by orthokeratinized stratified squamous epithelium. The cystic capsule was composed of d… Show more

“…DCs above the geniohyoid muscle often present as a swelling in the sublingual region. 3,7 On the other hand, swelling in the submental or submandibular region is often seen when the cyst is located between or below the geniohyoid and mylohyoid muscles. 3,7,12 Other complaints include altered speech, problems with swallowing, phonation, breathing, and double-chin development, especially in large lesions.…”

“…Cystic lingual and floor-of-mouth masses in children often present a diagnostic dilemma due to the wide array of potential etiologies, including inflammatory pseudocyst (ranula), infection, lymphatic or vascular malformation, branchial cleft remnant, thyroglossal duct cyst, and dermoid/epidermoid cyst. Although separated from the floor of the mouth by the mylohyoid muscle, many authors include the submental space in discussions of the floor of the mouth due to its shared embryology [ 1 ]. Masses involving this region most commonly occupy three anatomic spaces: the submental, sublingual, and midline lingual septum.…”

“…It is a benign skin lesion originating from the outer hair root sheath, with low incidence and few reports. [ 1 , 2 ] A case of TC was diagnosed and treated in our department, and the report is as follows.…”
