“…Nonetheless, some reports have shown it to be a relatively safe procedure for the diagnosis of hydatid cysts [22][23][24]. Von Sinner et al [8], in a review of 40 studies of FNAC of the hydatid cyst involving 31 patients over a 15-year period, recorded only 6 complications, of which only 1 patient had a severe anaphylactic reaction with a sudden drop in blood pressure and signs of shock.…”

“…To prevent the spillage of cyst contents in such an urgent situ ation, careful aspiration of the cyst fluid followed by hypertonic saline irrigation is strongly advised. Similarly, Hira et al [39] state that in case of an inadvertently punc tured hydatid cyst, as much fluid as possible should be aspirated to keep the intracystic pressure low, so as to pre vent leakage. The cavity should be irrigated with adequate sterilizing agents and a confirming CT should be ob tained.…”

“…The cavity should be irrigated with adequate sterilizing agents and a confirming CT should be ob tained. A formal craniotomy and excision of the cyst wall should succeed the inadvertent, in this specific case the emergency puncture [39][40][41], Initiation of mebendazole or a similar antiparasite therapy even before a planned hydatid cyst operation in neurosurgery may be a clever strategy.…”

“…15 Cytology has not usually been considered a primary diagnostic technique for the detection of echinococcosis; fine needle aspiration should not be attempted because of the danger of a severe anaphylactic reaction, 1 although unintended percutaneous aspirations have occurred without complications. 6,9,11 Identification of hooklets, scolices or both in smears of cyst fluid (obtained either at the time of surgery or from surgically removed cysts) provides a rapid and definitive diagnosis; if Echinococcus is identified, the clinician can be promptly alerted to the possibility of an allergic reaction. 7,15 Scolices of E granulosus are seen as polychromatic, oval structures bearing a crown of hooklets, which are sickleshaped, refractile entities that can be seen also scattered in the background.…”
