Diagnosis of soft tissue tumours by Tru-Cut® biopsy

Abstract: Tru-Cut biopsies were obtained from 52 consecutive patients referred with soft tissue tumours. Forty-five patients had soft tissue sarcomas; seven had benign soft tissue tumours. Of the biopsies 96 per cent provided adequate material for diagnosis. The histological diagnosis made from the Tru-Cut biopsy was compared with that made from the resected specimen. There were no false positive diagnoses of malignancy. The accuracy of Tru-Cut biopsy was 98 per cent for the diagnosis of malignancy and 94 per cent for t… Show more

“…In that respect, the results of our study appear disappointing at first sight. Recent studies have reported excellent results of large core needle biopsies with a reported sensitivity ranging between 90-95% [2,3,5,8], but in the present study large core needle biopsies were still less often used M A N U S C R I P T…”

“…The aforementioned good results of core needle biopsies come from referral centers [2,[12][13][14], where there is vast experience with sarcoma treatment and hence with the diagnostic work-up too. The limited sensitivity of needle biopsies in the present population based cohort is most likely explained by less experience with the collection of specimens, and less experience with the evaluation of the retrieved material.…”

“…In most cases, a core needle biopsy is adequate to obtain diagnostic tissue, and the accuracy of core needle biopsies is excellent, with a high sensitivity and specificity [21][22][23]. Combined with low morbidity, this is the diagnostic procedure of choice.…”

“…In response to this critical need for a specific diagnosis, some investigators are using core needle biopsy, both alone or concurrently with FNA, in an attempt to improve sensitivity and specificity. 1, [23][24][25] Determination of the specific type of sarcoma is often complex and difficult even after surgical material is available. 26,27 This report investigates the role FNA plays in the evaluation of patients with sarcoma at one institution.…”
