Diagnosis of the early carious lesion

Abstract: In recent decades a desire has driven the uptake of the minimum intervention dentistry (MID) philosophy to end the destructive 'drill and fill' mentality prevalent amongst dental training programmes since the establishment of formalized dental training courses more than 100 years ago. This change in attitude has been concomitant with the decrease in caries prevalence in large sectors of the community and a better understanding of the caries process. One of the pivotal arms of MID is caries risk assessment, and… Show more

“…Premature detection of caries lesions confined to the enamel layer would prevent their progression and cavitation, and preserve the tooth structure 1,3,4 . Therefore, early dental caries diagnosis ensures minimally invasive intervention, such as enamel remineralization which, combined with the management of caries risk factors, may the reverse the carious process 4,5 .…”

“…Dentistry, over the past few years has undergone and seen a lot of advancements in its daily practice [1]. Latest diagnostic imaging techniques like Ultrasonography, Cone beam computed tomography and procedures like Microsurgery, Implants, Lasers and Nanotechnology have made dentistry, as one of the front runners in medical fraternity [2].…”
