Diagnostic accuracy of interleukin-6 levels in peritoneal fluid for detection of endometriosis

Abstract: While our outcomes show moderate usefulness of peritoneal IL-6 levels in discrimination of moderate to severe endometriosis, further studies might be needed to determine the usefulness of peritoneal IL-6 levels in detection of early stages of endometriosis, as such a finding would be more relevant in clinical decision making.

“…Analysis of the concentrations of these cytokines showed differential diagnostic usefulness for endometriosis. Peritoneal concentrations of IL-6 offer relatively good diagnostic accuracy [37]. At the same time, a very recent study has shown that at the cut-off value of 3.00 pg/ml peritoneal TNF-α can be a reliable screening marker for the prediction of endometriosis in adolescents [38].…”

“…Ghrelin levels were increased in peritoneal fluid of patients with endometriosis, and positively correlated with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) [6]. Further, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and VEGF might contribute towards development of the ectopic endometrial implants [7,8]. Therefore, it is apparent that patients with endometriosis have an active inflammatory environment in peritoneal cavity, which is possibly responsible for the pain associated with endometriosis [9].…”

“…3 Afferent sensory fibers and proinflammatory mediators are correlated with endometriosis pain, which can be considered an inflammatory neuropathic pain. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] However, excision of endometriotic lesions and/or anti-inflammatory drugs cannot relieve pain symptoms completely. What is more, a high probability of recurrence and serious side effects might occur, 1,[12][13][14][15] thereby leading to the dilemma in its clinical treatment.…”
