Diagnostic Accuracy of the Eating Assessment Tool-10 (EAT-10) in Screening Dysphagia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The Eating Assessment Tool-10 (EAT-10) is used worldwide to screen people quickly and easily at high risk for swallowing disorders. However, the best EAT-10 cutoff value is still controversial. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we estimated and compared the diagnostic accuracy of EAT-10 cutoff values of 2 and 3 for screening dysphagia. We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CNKI, WANFANG, and VIP databases from May 2008 to March 2022. The meta-analysis included 7 studies i… Show more

“…6 EAT-10 has been proven to be a sensitive method to detect dysphagia as was shown in a recent meta-analysis. 7 Some studies have introduced EAT-10 as a screening tool to predict aspiration. [8][9][10] Quick and simple tools are also necessary for screening of swallowing.…”

“…Both these scales are widely recognized and utilized in clinical settings for the objective evaluation of swallowing and voice functions. [5][6][7] Lower total scores on these scales indicate better functional outcomes. The current established threshold for the EAT-10 scale is 3 points.…”

“…The severity of dysphagia symptoms is descriptive of the risk of bolus penetration into the airway (Alkhuwaiter et al, 2022). Subjective assessment tools for dysphagia use self-reported questionnaires such as the Eating Assessment Tool-10 (EAT-10) and Sydney Swallow Questionnaire (SSQ; Szczesniak et al, 2014; Zhang et al, 2023). Total scores for the EAT-10 and SSQ range, respectively, from 0 to 40 and from 0 to 1,700 (Möller et al, 2020; Szczesniak et al, 2014), with higher scores indicating more severe dysphagia symptoms.…”

“…Although the relationship between subjective questionnaires and videofluoroscopy diagnoses has been investigated (Audag et al, 2019; Bartlett et al, 2022; Zhang et al, 2023), the reported correlation ranges were inconsistent. Therefore, in this study, a meta-analysis and a systematic review were conducted to rigorously assess the correlations between videofluoroscopy and two commonly used subjective questionnaires, EAT-10 and SSQ.…”
