Diagnostic and prognostic relevance of microparticles in peripheral and uterine blood of patients with endometrial cancer

Abstract: Objectives: Exosomes-microvesicles which are secreted by living cells-can be produced from different cell types and detected in various body fluids. They are the carriers of intercellular information which regulate tumor microenvironment and are considered to be involved in tumor progression and metastasis. Cancer cells can secrete more exosomes than healthy cells, and are expected to be potential tools for tumor diagnosis and treatment. Material and methods: In this report, we present the results of micropart… Show more

“…Similar increases have been reported in other pathological situations, mostly associated to inflammation. The amount of EVs is increased in serum of patients with alcoholic hepatitis [38], β-thalassemia [39], endometrial [40] or lung cancer, correlating with tumor stage [41], obesity and diabetes mellitus [42], and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, associated with systemic inflammation [43] and in serum of children with autism spectrum disorder [26]. Inflammation seems to trigger the increased amount of EVs in most of these situations.…”

“…Exosomes are involved in cell-to-cell signaling, and play a role in both physiological and pathological processes. Exosomes are released by all cell types, both under normal and pathological conditions, but in cancer cells the process is more pronounced compared to normal cells (2,19,31,32) . Circulating exosomes were first described in 1981 as extracellular vesicles released by cancer cells.…”
