Diagnostic Convergent Interviewing to Inform Redesign Toward Sustainable Work Systems for Paramedics

Abstract: Many paramedics are working under levels of fatigue that would warrant immediate removal from the workplaces in other industries and such high levels of fatigue indicate a work system that is not sustainable. Sustainable work systems (SWS) build on a sociotechnical systems approach to work redesign. To diagnose the key issues in a work system, and inform any redesign or interventions, a powerful diagnostic tool, such as convergent interviewing, may be helpful. Convergent interviewing was applied to a paramedic… Show more

“…The method, and its considerations, are detailed in [27]. For a recent detailed outline of the processes involved in the method, see [29]. A further benefit of convergent interviewing is that the results can inform change planning by surfacing and organizing issues that are often represented from a systems perspective [26].…”

“…Alternatively, the research could begin with a set of convergent interviews (see [84]) to surface the core, common integration mechanisms used in a particular context, which may include mechanisms and capabilities beyond those in Table 1 above, and then, once having derived the core, key issues and generated a system model suggesting how the issues are inter-related, the researcher could then apply that coding to a content analysis of secondary documents.…”
