Diagnostic Exercise: Tyzzer's Disease, Distemper, and Coccidiosis in a Pup

Abstract: Abstract. A 2-month-old mongrel dog had multifocal necrotizing hepatitis, interstitial pneumonia, and hemorrhagic enteritis. Immunohistochemistry detected antigens of Clostridium piliforme in the intestine and liver, and antigens of canine distemper virus within the lung, urinary bladder, brain, spleen, and liver. Furthermore, uncharacterized intralesional coccidian protozoa were observed within the intestine.

“…g The intensity and distribution of immunoreactivity of the panel of antibodies were subjectively evaluated and combined into grades of 0, absent; +, discrete; ++, moderate; and +++, marked. Tissue sections from a previous case of distemper 10 and toxoplasmosis (Headley, unpublished data) were used as positive controls. For negative controls, phosphate buffered saline solution was substituted for the primary antibody.…”

“…It must be highlighted that coinfections of CaKV with other viral agents were identified in several tissues/organs, including the cerebrum, lung, and the tonsils (Table 1); and there was concomitant parvovirus enteritis and giardiasis. Mixed infections in dogs have been previously related with descriptions of simultaneous viral, bacterial, and parasitic agents [10,11], as well as mixed infections with multiple viral agents [12].…”

“…Clostridium piliforme usually causes sporadic disease, which has been observed in many species of domestic, wild, and laboratory animals, including rodents, lagomorphs, dogs, cats, horses, birds, and primates. Other lesions commonly reported for animals with Tyzzer' s disease, among which are paintbrush hemorrhages in the cecum, mucosal necrosis and edema of the intestine, and myocardial necrosis (particularly near the apex), 5,8 were not present in this oryx. Carrier animals are a possible source of infective spores, with transmission likely occurring through ingestion of fecescontaminated soil or feed.…”
