Diagnostic utility of cytospin, cell block and immunocytochemistry in pleural effusion cytology

Abstract: Background: With the introduction of cytospin, the sensitivity of diagnosing malignancies has increased mainly due to the increase in cellular yield. Cell block also gives the advantage of ancillary testing and allows for retrospective studies. Immunocytochemical markers are used to differentiate and subtype various malignancies in body effusions.Aim of the study was to compare the morphological features of both technique and to assess the diagnostic utility of cell block methods in the cytodiagnosis of pleura… Show more

“…Most of the malignant cases are in the 6 th decade. 5 In the present study, 149 patients (62.10%) were female and 91 patients (37.9%) were male, male: female ratio being 1:1.6. According to the study by Mulkalwar et al, females are affected more than males with M: F ratio of 1:1.5. than females.…”

“…In our study, IHC helped identify the site of origin in 21 (77.78%) of the 27 (100%) malignant cases in pleural fluids and 16 (76.19%) of the 21 (100%) cases in peritoneal fluids. After applying IHC to the 27 (100%) positive cases on the CB, Miachieo N et al demonstrated in their study that the main site of malignancy was discovered in 19 (70.37%) cases; hence, IHC proved to be useful in identifying the precise site of origin of malignancy in most cases [18].…”
