Diagnostic Value of Choline PET in the Preoperative Localization of Hyperfunctioning Parathyroid Gland(s): A Comprehensive Overview

Abstract: Hyperparathyroidism is a metabolic disorder characterized by the excessive production of the parathyroid hormone. The diagnosis is based on clinical and laboratory data. In most cases the only treatment is surgery and a correct preoperatory localization of the hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland(s) is essential. Currently, ultrasonography combined with [99mTc]Tc-MIBI parathyroid scintigraphy, optionally associated with single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT), represent the stan… Show more

“…Moreover, choline PET is a novel diagnostic method for PT, which this study failed to highlight due to its novelty. It was reported to bear the potential as a significantly more sensitive method to replace traditional imaging ( 9 ). However, even with the development of novel diagnostic methods, different diagnosis still remains the priority issue in the area of PT diagnosis.…”

“…Other advantages of 18 F-choline PET/CT include a shorter imaging time [42], higher spatial resolution [59], and a lower www.e-enm.org 747 radiation dose (2.8 mSv) than 99m Tc-sestamibi SPECT/CT (6.8 mSv) [60][61][62]. Despite its superior diagnostic performance compared to conventional imaging in detecting parathyroid lesions, its use is still limited due to its high cost and low availability [61].…”
