Diagnostics in cystic echinococcosis: Serology versus ultrasonography

Abstract: Background/Aims: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is the most widespread zoonosis worldwide. The objective of the present study was to compare diagnostic methods in the work-up of suspected cystic echinococcosis of the liver. Materials and Methods: Data from a total of 68 patients were compiled and analyzed. Results: A diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis was made in 36.8% of patients. Broken down according to WHO criteria, patients with at least one echinococcus cyst were determined in 12.0% of cases to exhibit cysts… Show more

“…Among all imaging modalities, ultrasonography is superior to both MRI and CT in visualization and evaluation of the morphology of liver cysts and hydatid cyst as in our case we didn't use MRI. We used U&S in first step [10]. In sensitivity rates of ultrasonography for diagnosis of hydatid cyst are (88% to 98%) and specificity are (93% to 100%) [10].…”

Abdominal cystic lesions as pesudocyst of pancreas, spleen cysts, mesenteric cysts, ovarian cysts and lymphangioma, must be considered in the differential diagnosis [8].…”

“…The combination of clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings help for a preliminary diagnosis. Among all imaging modalities, ultrasonography is superior to both MRI and CT in visualization and evaluation of the morphology of liver cysts and hydatid disease [7]. In the literature, very high sensitivity (88% to 98%) and specificity (93% to 100%) rates are given for ultrasonography in the diagnosis of hydatid disease [7].…”
