In response to the growing concern about environmental sustainability and natural resource depletion, car manufacturers are looking for ways to make their vehicles more efficient. One approach is to use turbocharging technology, which compresses the air entering the engine cylinder for a higher power density per unit of displacement volume. Although turbocharging can reduce carbon emissions by improving engine performance, it has several disadvantages, including reduced reliability and service life, increased maintenance frequency and cost, and reliance on high quality fuels and lubricants. This study investigates the possible continuous monitoring of the running time of the turbocharger (TCR) rotor shaft and the influence of various input parameters, such as oil pressure and oil temperature, on TCR wear. We hypothesize that the continuous monitoring of these variables could prevent breakdowns and optimize turbocharger operation. We created a test bench consisting of an internal combustion engine (ICE) combined with a turbocharging system which includes an independent lubrication and braking mechanism. Our experiments demonstrated a positive correlation between oil inlet temperature and wear sensitivity over time. We also revealed a close relationship between oil inlet pressure, thermal properties, initial rotor speed, and wear duration. These results indicate that continuous qualitative and quantitative monitoring of wear progression can predict impending failures and increase turbocharger efficiency. The evaluation of the TCR sensitivity to wear time can assess both the quality of the turbocharger assembly at the manufacturing stage and the adequacy of its preliminary adaptation in real conditions.

Turbocharging is a promising solution for increasing the specific power of motor-and-tractor equipment, which allows increasing power up to 50%. At the same time, a significant growth of speed, load, and temperature modes leads to a significant increase in the number of failures and a decrease in reliability by 2-3 times. Theoretical and experimental studies established that the temperature of the bearing and oil at the turbocharger drain changes under the influence of the inlet oil temperature to the TCR bearing, the TCR rotor shaft speed, and the change in the oil pressure at the input to the TCR bearing. This allows setting the limits of the TCR bearing performance in extreme operating conditions. The installation of an autonomous TCR lubricating and braking device maintains the required reliability level and increases failure-free operation. The hydraulic accumulator installed in the lubrication system of the engine turbocharger regulars lubricates and cools the rotor bearings when the ICE crankshaft speed drops. The incorporation of a braking device reduces the rundown time of the rotor and thereby prevents oil starvation and dry friction of the rotor bearing. The combined use of the hydraulic accumulator and the braking device minimizes the risk of dry friction and accidental failure of the turbocharger. We proved that the braking device of the TCR rotor built into the intake system of an ICE with the calculated design parameters reduces the rotor rundown time by 30-35%. This reduces the dimensions and operating time of the hydraulic accumulator and simultaneously eliminates surges in the compressor section of the TCR and any breakage of its parts. In these conditions, it is relevant to develop independent systems to lubricate the TCR bearings and replenish them using built-in hydraulic accumulators during start-up, significant loads at minimum crankshaft speeds, and engine stalling.

Harmful motor vehicle emissions are often the primary source of urban air pollution worldwide. Incorrectly serviced high-mileage motor vehicles emit significantly more harmful substances into the atmosphere than established by accepted standards. This paper presents an algorithm for the process of diagnostics and analysis of the technical condition of the fuel supply system elements for internal combustion engines (ICE) by means of selective sampling of exhaust gases. A gas analyzer system allows for the simultaneous monitoring of the 4 components of exhaust gases: CO, CH, O2 and CO2, assessment of the air-fuel ratio and internal combustion engine crankshaft rotation speed. Studies were carried out on an engine and a series of malfunctions were created artificially, by means of installing faulty elements and additional elements simulating different degrees of wear on the ICE systems. The study resulted in the development of a method and a hardware and software system. These allow for the test regimes to be established, in order to determine the failure of ICE systems which affect the composition of the exhaust gas.
