In this paper, we argue that we face an interaction paradox in management education. We thus have a situation where students want to talk to their teachers and teachers want to engage in dialogue but neither side seems to get anywhere. Using qualitative and quantitative data from both business school students and teachers, we explore the reasons for this paradox and look for possible solutions. Based on our analysis and interpretation of the data, we propose a conceptual model that shows how feedback is fundamental for effective learning. The conceptual model can be used to understand the interaction paradox. It has implications for both individual teachers and, on an institutional level, for creating conditions conducive for effective feedback and dialogue between students and teachers.

INTRODUCCIÓN. Saber dialogar es una competencia compleja, que es clave tanto para el desarrollo cognitivo y afectivo como para la convivencia democrática en una sociedad culturalmente diversa. MÉTODO. Este trabajo se plantea con tres objetivos: 1) examinar la estructura factorial y fiabilidad de un cuestionario para la evaluación de habilidades de diálogo en estudiantes de10 a 14 años; 2) analizar si el alumnado de secundaria muestra niveles más altos de habilidad para dialogar en comparación con primaria y ver si aparece un patrón diferencial entre hombres y mujeres; 3) analizar las posibles correlaciones entre dimensiones de diálogo y empatía. Los participantes en el estudio fueron 434 estudiantes del último ciclo de primaria (223) y primerciclo de secundaria (211), de 6 centros educativos de la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca. Como instrumentos se emplearon la escala de empatía, en su versión para estudiantes, de Eisenberg y colaboradores y un cuestionario para evaluar habilidades de diálogo, construido ad hoc por el equipo investigador. RESULTADOS. El análisis factorial exploratorio permitió identificar tresfactores en el cuestionario de habilidades de diálogo: 1) facilitación de la comprensión del mensaje, 2) reconocimiento y búsqueda de colaboración en la interacción y 3) cortesía-descortesía. Los análisis de varianza de dos factores —género y etapa— mostraron un perfil diferencial del género, especialmente en los cursos de secundaria, con puntuaciones más altas en las mujeres en el segundo factor. Asimismo, se encontraron correlaciones positivas con empatía en los dos primeros factores de diálogo. DISCUSIÓN. Queda patente la necesidad de entrenamiento educativo. Por un lado, las diferencias fueron especialmente relevantes en aquellos aspectos básicos más relacionados con las habilidades de diálogo que implican reconocimiento y empatía, particularmenteen secundaria. Por otro lado, no se encontraron diferencias significativas en habilidades complejas de colaboración en el diálogo, en donde las puntuaciones fueron particularmente bajas.

Given the challenges of developing inter-culturally competent, digitally literate, team players amidst a realm of other postgraduate competencies this paper outlines the initiative developed by academic teams from three European institutions. The paper outlines the virtual intercultural collaboration and its development and then reports on the results of a survey conducted with participating students from two years of the initiative. Students' perceptions of the generic value of specific skills sets in virtual team working and intercultural competence are identified as well as their views of the specific project's capacity to develop their own skills in the relevant areas, are explored. The results suggest that since social media, team work and intercultural interactions seem to be ever present dimensions of the contemporary world of work it appears to be important that students encounter meaningful virtual and intercultural learning opportunities during their postgraduate management studies. Finally this paper highlights the value of inter-programme teaching and learning collaborative activities between European higher education institutions.
