Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Pediatric Patients in Lima, Perú

Abstract: Abstract. We conducted a prospective study in three hospitals in Lima in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) children to determine the frequency of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli. Five E. coli colonies/patients were studied by a multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction to identify the six currently recognized groups of diarrhea-associated E. coli . We have analyzed 70 HIV-associated diarrheal and 70 control samples from HIV-infected children without diarrhea. Among the diarrheal episodes 19% were persisten… Show more

“…This finding has been proposed to be a result of acquired immunity (105,137) due to poor sanitary conditions as well as frequent exposure to pathogenic E. coli strains, resulting in the development of protective antibodies and colonization rather than infection. This has been stated in studies conducted in developing countries.…”

“…In a number of studies, EAEC has been isolated in almost equal numbers from patients suffering from diarrhea and from control groups (15,133,137). This finding has been proposed to be a result of acquired immunity (105,137) due to poor sanitary conditions as well as frequent exposure to pathogenic E. coli strains, resulting in the development of protective antibodies and colonization rather than infection.…”

“…EAEC is associated with diarrhea, failure to thrive, weight loss, and stunted growth in children living in developing countries (Steiner et al, 1998; Albert et al, 1999; Lima et al, 2000; Medina et al, 2010; Hebbelstrup Jensen et al, 2014). EAEC-positive children were seen to have increased levels of fecal lactoferrin and Il-1β, regardless of the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms in a Brazilian study (Steiner et al, 1998).…”

“…In a study of HIV-infected children in Peru, 74% of the diarrheagenic E. coli strains detected were highly resistant to ampicillin (74%) and cotrimoxazole (70%) (684). The current Infectious Disease Society of America practice guidelines for the management of infectious diarrhea recommend fluoroquinolones for the treatment of immunocompromised patients (685).…”
