Diastolic dysfunction and exercise capacity in patients with metabolic syndrome and overweight/obesity

Abstract: BackgroundLeft ventricle diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) is a common finding in high risk individuals, its presence being associated with reduced exercise capacity (EC). We assessed the prevalence of LVDD, applying the 2016 guidelines of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE)/European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI), in a population with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome and its association with EC.Methods and resultsThis was a prospective, cross-sectional study of a cohort of 235 pa… Show more

“…Metabolic syndrome is a complex condition characterized by insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and obesity (Alonso-Gómez et al, 2019), and stands as a risk factor for cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (Razay et al, 2007;Farooqui et al, 2012;Neergaard et al, 2017;Kong et al, 2018). One of the features of metabolic syndrome, is the excess visceral fats producing inflammatory cytokines which are named adipokines.…”

“…The latter algorithm, on the other hand, also resulted in labeling 36 patients as “indeterminate”, compared to no such cases when the former was applied [50]. Another application of the same guideline on a cohort of 235 Spanish patients with metabolic syndrome, of which 52 confirmed diabetics, resulted in a prevalence of diastolic dysfunction as low as 3%, while 58% were rated as normal and 39% were “indeterminate” before conducting further cardiopulmonary exercise tests [53].…”

“…Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of symptoms or conditions including; central obesity, high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. 1 Among them, central obesity, has been viewed as a serious problem of the 21 st -century, 2 and is associated with various metabolic disorders. 3 Excess visceral fat, causes the secretion of bioactive peptides; known as adipokines, and thus, links with other parts of the body.…”
