Bioassessment of surface waters is one of the most important approaches to predict the deterioration of ecosystems and achieve environmental sustainability according to the application of the European Water Framework Directive. The present review emphasizes the importance of the bioassessment of freshwater quality especially running waters based on diatom metrics. Nutrient enrichment and hydromorphological alternation driven by human activities are the main factors for the ecological compromise of freshwater ecosystems. Currently, the bioassessment of the ecological condition of inland water bodies is adopted worldwide. Bioassessment is complementary to physico-chemical and hydromorphological data for evaluating the ecological conditions of rivers; however, measuring all the physical and chemical changes is expensive and impractical. Therefore, monitoring biota helps to determine the changes occurring in ecosystems. Thus, diatoms are used as bioindicators to assess environmental conditions of the ecosystems, but their use requires great taxonomic knowledge, otherwise, the results will be biased. Many diatom indices have been developed based on the trophic weight and indicator values of diatoms in different ecoregions in the last decades. This review highlights the importance and advantages of using diatom metrics in the bioassessment of the ecological status of surface waters in the different ecoregions, especially running water. To analyze the complex response of diatom communities to environmental gradients and assess the quality of the ecosystem, multivariate statistical approaches are needed.The challenge here is how to define criteria for classes of water bodies in a biologically meaningful way. For this reason, Biological Condition Gradient is suggested as an appropriate and effective approach to develop trophic criteria based on the relationships between nutrient concentrations and biological indicators of ecological conditions.

The present study provides a detailed report on the occurrence and record of diatom taxa from the Thamirabarani River. A total number of 55 diatom taxa belonging to 25 genera were identified. The result shows the abundance of diatom genera viz. Amphora, Aulacoseira, Cyclotella, Cymbella, Eunotia, Gomphonema, Melosira and Ulnaria in the study area indicated varying pollution levels and pristine conditions. The diversity of diatom taxa in Site 1 and Site 3-7 indicate that the river water is not polluted in these locations. Domestic waste input in the river at Site 2 area may responsible for the dominant occurrence of moderate pollution tolerant diatoms taxa. The abundance of pollution tolerant diatom taxa in Site 8, Site 9 and Site 10 areas of the river indicates high pollution. The Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) results also show that the concentration of diatom taxa and physico-chemical parameters suggest the release of industrial effluents and anthropogenic activity. The proper waste water treatment methods need to be implemented along the catchment areas of the river to ratify pollution levels. Diatom assemblages and coastal sedimentary facies succession in the deltaic plain of the Colorado River (Argentina) were studied in order to reconstruct the environment conditions in response to Holocene eustatic sea-level changes and delta progradation. Samples were selected from a 200˗cm core (39°35'52" S, 62°6'43" W). Chronology was based on radiocarbon datings in bulk samples and mollusk shells.Nine lithological units were recognized where fine and very fine sand predominate.The core sediments were dominated by tychoplanktonic coastal-marine diatoms. The accompanying flora included stable marine-coastal taxa and allochthonous fluvial freshbrackish species. Three diatom zones (DZ) were established based on cluster analyses.The LCH site was significantly affected by Late Pleistocene and Holocene sea˗level fluctuations, and the progradation of the deltaic lobe during the last ca. 7,000 14 C yr. BP.Ancient tidal channels were flooded in the early Holocene postglacial transgression.Erosive and re˗working processes associated with the formation of estuarine channels, affected valves preservation, yielding with barren sections. Tidal flats and marshes have developed in the area during the late Holocene regression phase. The comparison of the sedimentary sequence with deltaic facies evolution models, confirm the presence of a hiatus, which masks the Holocene Maximum and highstand.
