Diazepam and memory: Support for a duplex model of memory

Abstract: In three experiments, the hypothesis that diazepam (Valium) selectively impairs the transfer of information from short-term to long-term memory was supported by differences between placebo and drugged subjects in effects of item difficulty, serial position (primacy-recency), and list length. In Experiment I, diazepam reduced recall in the primacy portion of the serial position function, but produced no performance difference in the recency component. Recall decreased in placebo subjects as item difficulty incr… Show more

“…In the delayed recall of the 15-word list, the contribution of short-term memory is eliminated and the diazepam subjects performed even more poorly. This was concluded previously by Mewaldt, Hinrichs and Ghoneim (1983). Thus, in line with previous research, memory was impaired after diazepam intake.…”

“…Undoubtedly, there is a relation with the decrease of vigilance and alertness [3]. Next to these effects, benzo diazepines induce anterograde amnesia: this means that the recall of information obtained under the influence of these drugs is impaired [1,[4][5][6][7], Nevertheless, the infor mation obtained before drug intake is intact, it is there fore thought that the retrieval mechanism works prop erly and that other stages of information processing are affected, such as the transfer from short-to long-term memory and the consolidation process [8], On the other hand, an improvement of the recall of information pre sented immediately before drug intake can be estab lished. This striking phenomenon is called retrograde facilitation [1.…”

“…Midazolam is a benzodiazepine that has the benefits of being metabolized quickly and of being watersoluble (13). These attributes help minimize potential side effects without disturbing other cognitive functions when midazolam is given in low doses, thereby providing a tool to investigate distinct forms of memory based on conscious accessibility in healthy participants (17,18). Previous research (17,19,20) showed that midazolam severely impaired performance on explicit memory tasks but not on implicit memory tasks.…”
