“…In each experiment the mean number of foci/cm2 for the DEN + PB positive control groups was on the low side of the range of values reported for the Sprague-Dawley rat in studies using similar protocols (Pereira et al , 1982;Milks et al , 1983b). The only difference in procedures, apart from animal strains, was the administration of PB in rat chow rather than in the drinking water.…”

“…, 1978;Tsuda et al . Trichloroethylene (TCY), however, was without effect (Milks et al , 1983b), possibly because the doses administered were well below the maximum that can be tolerated (Mitoma et al, 1985). , , 1984Shinozuka and Lombardi, 1980;Pereira et al .…”

“…A major reason why an initiating effect of DBE was evident in this study but not in the study of Milks et al (1982) is probably their use of phenobarbital promotion versus our use of AAF-CC14. In a comparison of the efficacy of different short-term systems for enhancing development of liver GGT foci after diethylnitrosamine, Leonard et al (1982) found that phenobarbital promotion produced three times fewer GGT foci in 8 weeks than did AAF-CC14 in 5 weeks.…”

“…An apparent exception, according to Milks et al (1982), is the widely used fumigant 1,2-dibromoethane (DBE). They reported that DBE lacked an initiator effect for the livers of Sprague-Dawley rats as assessed by gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) positive foci.…”

“…EDB has been shown to be mutagenic in various test systems (Vogel and Chandler 1974;Brem et al 1974;Nachtomi and Sarma 1977;Rannug 1980) and is reported to be carcinogenic to experimental animals and shown to cause squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach in rats and mice (Olson et al 1973;Powers et al 1975). Based on a histochemical bioassay of induction of gamma glutamyl transpeptidase foci in the rat liver, Milks et al (1982) concluded that EDB is a promoter of hepatocarcinogenesis. Other reported effects of EDB are on the reproductive system.…”
