DICOM structured report document type definition

Abstract: The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard recently introduced rules for the encoding, transmission and storage of the structured diagnostic report. This medical document can be stored and communicated with the images. It has a structure and may contain text, with links to other data such as images, waveforms and spatial or temporal coordinates. The prompt availability of the radiology report is crucial for implementing a Patient Electronic Record. Using the extensible markup language … Show more

“…Next, to benefit from the AI-based algorithm, the radiologist may send images to a DICOM node where the AI system is deployed. The AI system receives the input DICOM images, processes them, and prepares the results as a: (1) DICOM mask, where an algorithm's output is represented as another DICOM image with voxel-values representing the findings; (2) Grayscale Softcopy Presentation State (GSPS) 14 ; (3) DICOM Segmentation (DICOM SEG) object 15 ; or (4) DICOM Structured Report (DICOM SR) 16 . After the result dataset is generated, it is sent to a separate Research-PACS; this enables the official EMR in PACS to remain intact.…”

“…The DOM is a platform-and language-independent standard object model for representing HTML or XML documents as well as an Application Programming Interface (API) for querying, traversing and manipulating such documents. This object model provides the ability to include Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) files in the report [45]. DICOM is a standard in the field of medical informatics for exchanging digital information between medical imaging equipment (such as radiological imaging) and other systems, ensuring interoperability.…”

“…We ask the students to generate three different types of DICOM files: (1) a DICOM secondary capture that wraps a specific image; (2) a DICOM structured report [9] that contains a specific text within a specific section structure; and (3) a Key Object Selection (KOS) that references a specific DICOM image. We also ask the students to validate the DICOM files they generate and to visualize them.…”
