Measurements of the thermomagnetic properties of sintered WC-Co composites are described. By means of suitable heat treatment, changes in the saturation magnetization and coercivity are produced in WC-25 wt% Co materials. These changes are reversible to a large extent, and the observations indicate the formation of Co3W on ageing at 700 °C after having previously homogenized at 1000 °C. The observed behaviour is consistent with the formation of small intra-granular precipitate particles in the Co phase. Observations for WC-3 wt% Co showed different solubilities for W in Co in high- and low-cobalt materials.
