“…Necrosis of bone was assessed when no stainable osteocyte nucleus was present, which according to Axhausen & Bergmann (1937) is a definite sign of necrosis, although some falsely empty osteocyte lacunae can appear when the section does not cut through the nucleus. In the present study, a comparison with the SO femora showed that these contained no areas where the osteocytes lacked stainable nuclei, and therefore the areas in the RBM and IMM femora lacking osteocyte nuclei were regarded as necrotic.…”
