“…Since the middle of the twentieth century, Lecanora has received considerable attention from systematists (e.g. Brodo 1984;Brodo et al 1994;Dickhäuser et al 1995;Eigler 1969;Eigler and Poelt 1965;Fröberg 1997;Grube et al 2004;Guderley 1999;Laundon 2003aLaundon , 2003bLeuckert and Poelt 1989;Lumbsch 1994;Lumbsch and Elix 2004;Lumbsch et al 1997;Miyawaki 1988;Motyka 1995Motyka , 1996aPoelt 1952Poelt , 1958Poelt , 1966Poelt et al 1995;Printzen 2001;Ryan 1989aRyan , b, 1998Ryan and Nash 1997;Ryan et al 2004;Śliwa and Wetmore 2000;Śliwa 2007; van den Boom and Brand 2008) and is probably one of the best studied crustose lichen genera. Lecanora, in its traditional circumscription (Zahlbruckner 1926), has been recognized to be an artificial assemblage of species, and several genera have been split off over the years (Choisy 1929(Choisy , 1949Hafellner and Türk 2001;Kalb 1991;Motyka 1995Motyka , 1996aPoelt 1983).…”

“…Other groups which are still maintained in Lecanora, however, appear to be more distinct from the core group of Lecanora than morphological data alone would suggest. This is the case for groups with lobate Lecanora species, which were formerly classified as subgenus Placodium (Poelt 1958). The name Protoparmeliopsis was introduced for Lecanora muralis (a member of Placodium) by Choisy (1929), but never accepted by other authors.…”

“…; Kirk et al 2001) it is understandable that there exists no recent monograph of the whole genus, except for the posthumous publication of Motyka (1995Motyka ( , 1996a, which has been rejected as a nomenclatural work. Certain morphologically defined groups, have, however, been studied in detail, for example subgenus Placodium (Poelt 1958), the Lecanora rupicola group (Leuckert & Poelt 1989), the Lecanora dispersa group (Poelt, Leuckert & Roux 1995), corticolous species with pruinose discs (Lumbsch et al 1997), species with a dark hypothecium (Lumbsch, Guderley & Elix 1996), or regional monographs of the Lecanora subfusca group (Brodo 1984, Miyawaki 1988, Lumbsch 1994, Ju¨riado 1998, Guderley 1999. The delimitation and relationships of these groups to others in the genus, could not be resolved by these studies, and requires molecular phylogenetic approaches.…”

“…Petrasterion subsect. Concolores sensu Poelt (1958). This subsection is a diverse assemblage, including species with deviating secondary compounds, as in L. somervelii Paulson, which contains calycin (Obermayer & Poelt 1992), and species with peculiar morphology, for example L. rhizinata Poelt, Barreno & V. J. Rico with large rhizines .…”

“…Placodium, is characterized by lobate thallus growth. A monographic treatment of lobate Lecanora species was first presented by Poelt (1958) and later followed by a regional study of species in the Himalayas (Poelt 1966). More recently, Poelt & Grube (19936) published a revision of Himalayan Placodium species, showing that subgen.…”
