Treatment of 1-P i Pr2-2-NMe2-indene (2[H]) with BrMn(CO)5 provided κ2-P,N-(2-NMe2-3-P i Pr2-indene)Mn(CO)3Br (4) in 73% yield. Addition of either AgBF4 or AgSO3CF3 to 4 yielded the corresponding inner-sphere tetrafluoroborate (5a) and triflate (5b) complexes in 62% and 65% yield, respectively. Deprotonation of 4, 5a, or 5b produced an intractable mixture of products. The cationic complex [κ2-P,N-(2-NMe2-3-P i Pr2-indene)Mn(CO)4]+BF4 - (6) was prepared in 30% yield by treating BrMn(CO)5 with AgBF4, followed by the addition of 2[H]. The benzocymantrene η5-[2]Mn(CO)3 was prepared in 56% yield via reduction of η5-(2-NMe2-3-P(S) i Pr2-indenyl)Mn(CO)3 with Cl3SiSiCl3. Compound 2[Li] reacts with BrMn(CO)5 to give a complex product mixture, from which 4 and [κ2-P,N-(2-NMe2-3-P i Pr2-indene)Mn(CO)4]+[Mn2(CO)8(μ-P i Pr2)]- (7) were isolated. 2-Dimethylaminoindene (1[H]) was silylated to give 1-SiMe3-2-NMe2-indene (8[H]) in 93% yield. Treatment of 8[Li] with ClP i Pr2, followed by the addition of BrMn(CO)5, afforded κ2-P,N-(1-SiMe3-2-NMe2-3-P i Pr2-indene)Mn(CO)3Br (10) in 27% yield. Alternatively, addition of 8[Li] to BrMn(CO)5 followed by the addition of ClP i Pr2 generated a mixture of products, from which the substituted 1,1‘-biindene rac-(2-NMe2-3-SiMe3-C9H5)2 (rac-12) was isolated. Treatment of 1[Li] with BrMn(CO)5 provided η5-(2-NMe2-indenyl)Mn(CO)3 (11) in 41% yield. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data for 4·0.5C7H8, 5a·0.5C7H8, 5b, 6, η5-[2]Mn(CO)3, 7·0.5C7H8, 10, 11, and rac-12 are reported.

The crystal and molecular structures of bis(eta(5)-2,4,7-trimethylindenyl)cobalt(II), [Co(C(12)H(13))(2)], (I), and rac-2,2',4,4',7,7'-hexamethyl-1,1'-biindene, C(24)H(26), (II), are reported. In the crystal structure of (I), the Co atom lies on an inversion centre and the structure represents the first example of a bis(indenyl)cobalt complex exhibiting an eclipsed indenyl conformation. The (1R,1'R) and (1S,1'S) enantiomers of the three possible stereoisomers of (II), which form as by-products in the synthesis of (I), cocrystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c. In the unit cell of (II), alternating (1R,1'R) and (1S,1'S) enantiomers pack in non-bonded rows along the a axis, with the planes of the indenyl groups parallel to each other and separated by 3.62 and 3.69 A.

Synthesis of Pentafulvalene by Oxidative Coupling of Cyclopentadienide with Copper(I1) ChlorideStarting with a nearly quantitative coupling of cyclonondtetraenide 7 to 1, 1'-dihydrononafulvalene 8 by means of AgBF,, a simple general synthetic concept for fulvalenes is outlined (Scheme 2), consisting in an oxidative coupling of 'Huckel anions' like 2 and 7 to 1, 1'-dihydrofulvalenes 10 with Ag(1) or Cu(I1) salts, followed by deprotonation (-11) and oxidation (412); it has been realised in the case ofpentafulvalene (1; overall yield 61 %; Scheme 3 ) and 1,2:5,6-dibenzopentafulvalene (18; overall yield 66%, Scheme 4 ) . NMR-spectroscopic investigations show that 1 is a non-aromatic compound with strongly alternating bond-lengths, its n-system being even more locdlised than that of simple pentafulvenes. In fact, 1 is extremely reactive in concentrated solutions above -50". Resides of polymerisations, Diets-Alder dimerisation 1 +19 followed by a rearrangement 19-20 takes place (Scheme 5 ) . 1.Einleitung. -Pentafulvalen (1) ist eine sowohl synthetisch wie theoretisch attraktive Verbindung, deren spektroskopische Daten wichtige Riickschliisse auf die n -Delokalisation und Ladungsdichteverteilung in gekreuzt konjugierten Systemen erlauben wiirden. Da 1 das n-System von Pentafulvenen aufweist, welches mit einer Butadien-Einheit iiberbriickt worden ist, konnte ein spektroskopischer Vergleich von 1 mit Pentafulvenen [ 1 J von Interesse sein.
