Recent findings of Taeniopteris-like foliage from the Carnian of Hopen, Svalbard, necessitated the re-evaluation of cycadophyte foliage from the Carnian flora of Neuewelt, Basel, Switzerland, revealing the illegitimate status of Taeniopteris angustifolia. The specimen from the Ladinian or Carnian (Lower Keuper) of Lower Franconia, Germany, on which the identification was based, was recently identified as the holotype of the marattialean fern Danaeopsis angustifolia, whereof Taeniopteris angustifolia is the basionym. This implies that the Neuewelt specimens lack any type and basionym, and a new species name is required. The specimens from Hopen as well as specimens elsewhere from Svalbard are identified as conspecific with the specimens from Neuewelt, and we here assign all specimens to Taeniopteris novomundensis sp.nov., which is thus known from the Carnian of Switzerland and Svalbard. Information on epidermal anatomy is not available, and the affinity of the species can, therefore, not be elucidated further, but is here interpreted as a cycadophyte. Several specimens from the Carnian of Franconia assigned to Taeniopteris angustifolia belong to a species different from Taeniopteris novomundensis, i.e. Taeniopteris kelberi. Earlier inclusion of some of the specimens now assigned to Taeniopteris novomundensis in Taeniopteris kelberi is unsupported. The typification and use of Taeniopteris are discussed in this framework.

A Commented Synopsis of the Pre-Pleistocene Fossil Record of Carex (Cyperaceae)

Despite the existence of a rich record, fossils of Carex have been largely neglected by neobotanists. Here we present an exhaustive critically commented checklist of the so-far published pre-Pleistocene records ascribed to Carex. We have made every attempt to include all pertinent paleobotanical literature. The extensive collection of the Museum für Naturkunde (Berlin, Germany) has also been studied. We found that up to 83 names belonging to different Carex groups may be applied to reliable remains, plus another 23 names of doubtful remains. These fossils come from more than 550 sites, mainly from C and E Europe and the Russian Federation. The age of the reliable fossil record ranges from the Eocene to recent times. Problems detected on the taxonomy, age and naming of these fossils are discussed. We hope that this work will stimulate neobotanical and paleobotanical communities to work together on broad-scope systematic projects as this one.

Zusammenfassung Aus dem Tertiar der Rhon werden 47 Pflanzenarten aus 32 Familien nach Friichten und Samen beschrieben. Sie entstammen den braunkohlenfuhrenden Kaltennordheimer Schichten vom Bauersberg bei Bischofsheim, Hochrain bei Gerstengrund und Kaltennordheim. Ihr untermiozanes Alter ist durch tierische Fossilien und radiometrische Altersdatierungen von Basalt festgelegt. Unklar bleibt ihre Einordnung in den Florenkomplex ,,Brandis-Bfina" (etwa 20,5-18 Mio. J.) oder ,,Kleinleipisch-Frantiikove LhznE" (junger als 17,5 Mio. J.). Schliisselworte: Braunkohlentertiar Rhon, Untermiozan, karpologische Fossilien. AbstractOn the base of fossil fruits and seeds 47 plant species belonging to 32 families are described. They have been derived from the browncoal-bearing layers of the Kaltennordheim section at the Bauersberg near Bischofsheim, Hochrain near Gerstengrund and Kaltennordheim. The age is Lower Miocene based on gastropods and mammals and also radiometic dates of the basalt. The assignment to the floral assemblages "Brandis-Bllina" (ca. 20,5 to 18 mi0 y.) or "Kleinleipisch-Frantis'kove-Lazn6"(younger than 17,5 mi0 y.) is still uncertain.
