Diel vertical migration of predators (planktivorous fish larvae) and prey (zooplankton) in a tropical lagoon

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Based on the hypothesis that diel vertical migration (DVM) is a mechanism of predator avoidance, the objective of the present study was to test for the occurrence of DVM in planktivorous fish larvae of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) and Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel, 1840) (Perciformes, Sciaenidae), and zooplankton (rotifers, cladocerans and copepods) in an isolated tropical lagoon in the floodplain of the Upper Paraná River, Brazil (region of Parque Nacional de… Show more

“…Such situations commonly result in diminished zooplankton migration (Gliwicz and Pijanowska, 1988;Leibold, 1990;Lampert, 2005). The lack of migration further highlights the importance of predation in determining prey distribution (Zaret and Suffern, 1976;Pearre, 2003;Mendonça et al, 2015). It is possible that zooplankton may develop specialized abilities to use the epilimnion more efficiently due to consistency in habitat use.…”

“…Stratified waterbodies therefore offer greater scope of discrete depth-habitats for diverse zooplankton to inhabit (Bini et al, 2001). The observed distribution patterns are the outcome of active movement of organisms in response to shifts in habitat quality (Mendonça et al, 2015;Picapedra et al, 2015) or passive vertical transport generated by mixing events (Kramer et al, 1997).…”

“…Its connection with the Paraná River was sporadic in years with very high floods; the last record was in 1996. However, after the construction of the Porto Primavera Reservoir, there have been no such floods to connect the lake with the Paraná River (Daga et al, 2009;Mendonça et al, 2015).…”

“…Consequently, it spread throughout the Paraná River basin (Torloni et al, 1993). These two species have become successful and are among the dominant species in many environments of the Upper Paraná River floodplain (Langeani et al, 2007), including in areas of environmental protection, such as the Parque Nacional de Ilha Grande (Daga et al, 2009;Baumgartner et al, 2010;Mendonça et al, 2015) and the Parque Estadual das Várzeas do Rio Ivinhema (Reynalte-Tataje et al, 2011).…”

“…Diel vertical migration (DVM) is a well-documented behavior among diverse taxa of zooplankton from tropical environments (TrE) [1][2][3] to higher latitude environments [4][5], and the adaptive significance of this behavior has been explained by a wide array of competing hypothesis [6]. The major driving factors of this behavior can be attributed to predator avoidance [7], prevention from light related mortality [8], the bioenergetic advantage [9], and demographic benefits [10].…”
