Membrane osmometry has been used to measure the Donnan osmotic pressure of different salts of carboxymethylcellulose (Na+-; Li+-; NHJ-; Ca+ +-; Mg+ +-CMC) in aqueous solutions of simple chloride electrolytes. The results are analyzed in terms of cylindrical cell model for linear polyelectrolyte solutions, using the Poisson-Boltmann equation in order to calculate the counterion densities at the cell boundaries. Significant deviations with increasing polyion concentration have been found for all the counterions investigated.
