Dielectric resonator‐based four‐element eight‐port MIMO antenna with multi‐directional pattern diversity

Abstract: This work presents a four‐element, eight‐port cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (cDRA) with multi‐directional pattern diversity for wireless access point applications. Initially, a dielectric resonator is fed by two different feeding techniques to create two simultaneous orthogonal patterns. This primary radiator is combined with similar radiators in a cross‐configuration to obtain an eight‐port multiple‐input‐multiple‐output (MIMO) antenna system. The antenna elements are placed in such a way that each… Show more

“…The total active reflection coefficient (TARC) is also an important parameter to define the diversity performance of multiport antenna system which can be calculated by: TARC=i=1Nbi2/i=1Nai2 where a i and b i represents incident and reflected signal waves, respectively, for the i th radiator out of N radiators in the MIMO system. For the N port system, these parameters are interrelated with N × N matrix of scattering parameters as per the equation bN×1=SN×NaN×1 …”

“…A quad‐port hybrid MIMO antenna comprised of cross dipole structure, a parasitic element, and annular ring ground was reported for local area networking applications . In comparison to nonplanar antenna structures, the radiators are arranged in the same plane in planar MIMO systems . However, the orthogonal mode excitation is popularly used for isolation improvement in both planar and nonplanar cases.…”

“…The modern communication systems desire high data rate and reliability with improved system capacity, which can be achieved by using a multi‐port antenna configuration. In a rich scattering environment, antenna diversity is an important technique, which mitigates the multipath fading problem . In recent years, multi‐port antenna systems have received remarkable attention as they utilize diversity techniques to improve quality, reliability, and signal reception of the wireless link.…”

“…Metamaterial surface shields and frequency selective surface walls (FSSs) have been used to avoid parasitic waves between antenna elements. A two‐element, 4‐port, and 8‐port CDRA diversity/MIMO system with bidirectional pattern diversity is proposed by Das et al for WLAN applications.…”
