Diesel engine applications for evaluation of performance and emission behavior of biodiesel from different oil stocks

Abstract: Extensive researches on alternative fuels have been carried out since the fossil-based fuels are limited. Many of these studies have ever been on the usability of vegetable oils in diesel engines. In the current work, biodiesel were produced from waste fish oil (FOB), hazelnut oil (HOB), rapeseed oil (ROB), and waste cooking oil (WCOB) by transesterification method. The same optimized variables of 6:1 methanol/oil molar ratio (mol/mol), 0.4% sodium methoxide concentration (wt.%), 60 C reaction temperature, 100… Show more

“…For CO emission from UCO biodiesel, Behcet et al . reported a 20.0% decrease, whereas Canakci and van Gerpen reported a 17.8% decrease. Canakci and van Gerpen used a John Deere 4276T, four‐cylinder, four‐stroke, turbocharged engine.…”

“…Compared to diesel, biodiesel can significantly reduce carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), and smoke emissions by 5%–10% . Due to the absence of sulfur in molecular biodiesel, the emission of sulfur oxides (SO X ) from biodiesel engine can be reduced to nearly zero . The R group in molecular biodiesel contains unsaturated C=C, consisting of a π bond and a σ bond, and the energy of π bond is much lower than that of the σ bond.…”

“…However, the addition of biodiesel can lead to increased NO x , corrosion in the fuel line and increased consumption as it has a lower heating value. Moreover, biodiesel products from different sources have different physical and chemical characteristics, which can lead to variable performance depending on the production source .…”
