Diet and foraging behaviour of brush-tailed phascogales (Phascogale tapoatafa) in the jarrah forest of south-western Australia

Abstract: The diet and foraging behaviour of an arboreal marsupial, the brush-tailed phascogale (Phascogale tapoatafa tapoatafa), was examined in the jarrah forest of south-western Australia. Radio-tracking was used to confirm the species’ nocturnal foraging habit and to make direct observations of foraging behaviour. Eleven stomachs, and a collection of 45 scats obtained during summer and autumn, were microscopically examined for content. The availability of major prey items (invertebrates found on or under the bark of… Show more

“…Bladon et al (2002) used nest boxes to study the life-history of a population of eastern pygmy-possums and investigated its response to habitat clearing. A number of studies have used a combination of nest boxes and traps to investigate the ecology of the brush-tailed phascogale (Soderquist 1993(Soderquist , 1995Soderquist and Lill 1993;Traill and Coates 1993;Soderquist and Ealey 1994;Scarff et al 1998;Rhind 2002;Rhind and Bradley 2002). For example, Traill and Coates (1993) studied its foraging ecology and use of den sites, Soderquist (1995) studied spatial organisation, and Rhind (2002) examined litter sizes, sex ratios and maternal investment.…”

“…This work provided information of the location of nests in relation to phascogale territory boundaries. The radio-tracking methods used are described in Scarff, Rhind & Bradley (1998) and, in brief, involved tracking directly to the phascogale, observing its behaviour and recording its location. A 3-h interval was imposed between successive fixes on the same individual.…”

“…Statistical comparison of taxa consumed with the availability of those taxa suggests that, like many dasyurids studied (e.g. by Fisher and Dickman 1993b;Scarff et al 1998;Gilfillan 2001;Lunney et al 2001;Allison et al 2006), N. yvonneae tends towards being a dietary generalist. This is based on a qualitative interpretation of the term generalist (see Fox and Archer 1984 for detailed discussion).…”
