Diet and foraging opportunism of the Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) in the Abrolhos Bank, Brazil

Abstract: Diet analysis allows exploring how coastal dolphins interact with the environment and their role in the marine food webs. We studied the diet and feeding ecology of the Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis, through analysis of stomach content from 42 animals stranded on the eastern coast of Brazil. A total of 1,336 semidigested prey items (fish, otoliths, cephalopod beaks, and crustaceans) were identified. Teleost fish comprised the most frequent food item (92% of the total), followed by cephalopods, and crustac… Show more

“…Few studies have made comparisons between males and females of Guiana dolphins (Pansard et al 2011, Bisi et al 2013, Rupil et al 2018, Rodrigues et al 2020, most of them have been carried out in the northernmost extent of their distribution in Brazil. In most of them, no differences were observed in feeding habits (Rupil et al 2018, Rodrigues et al 2020 and isotopic niches (Bisi et al 2013) between sex classes. Only Pansard et al (2011) found a difference between the main food items of Guiana dolphins' males and females on the northeast coast of Brazil.…”

“…Ontogenetic changes in otolith contour have been widely observed in several species (Capoccioni et al 2011, Vignon 2012. In C. undecimalis, variations in the contour throughout ontogeny were also found ( Table 1 and Table 2), studies that describe the ontogenetic variations in the shape of otoliths are of paramount importance for the identification of prey of ichthyophagous fishes (Bugoni and Vooren 2004, Carvalho et al 2019, Rodrigues et al 2019).…”

“…Guiana dolphins are generally found in sheltered coastal waters such as bays and estuaries (Azevedo et al, 2017; Cremer, 2015), as these regions provide increased prey availability and protection from predators (Caballero et al, 2010; Rossi‐Santos et al, 2010). However, they can also be found in more open‐ocean coastal environments like the Abrolhos bank (Rodrigues et al, 2020).…”
