“…These RNA differences, located in the apical loop as depicted in Figure 4c, can be considered diagnostic nucleotides in separating the two taxa since are invariantly present in all sequences analysed, regardless of the geographic distance occurring among samples. The occurrence in sympatry of individuals carrying mitochondrial haplotypes from the two divergent haplogroups, without intermediate haplotypes, is suggestive of a secondary contact between these two groups that could have diverged in allopatry (Carmona et al., 2014; Ekimova et al., 2019). The level of phylogenetic divergence between F. cavolini and F. gaditana is not large, suggesting a recent origin of these species.…”

“…configuration. Examples of these ecosystems, such as bacterial assemblages evolving dependencies through mutual adaptation(Morris et al 2011;Harvey et al 2014), ecosystems recovering from invasions of foreign species(Chisholm 2010), or uninhabited regions colonized by a small number of species adaptively radiating through rapid allopatric and hybrid speciation(Lamichhaney et al 2018;Ekimova et al 2019), imply that this pattern of niche exploration and complementary adaptation away from initial conflict does generally play out in the long term.…”

“…There is a growing body of evidence that ecological factors play an important role in in structuring the genetic diversity of marine populations and promoting speciation (Prada and Hellberg 2020; Taylor and Hellberg 2005; Whitney, Donahue, and Karl 2018; Momigliano et al 2017; Teske et al 2019; Holt et al 2020; Bird et al 2011; Choat et al 2012; Potkamp and Fransen 2019; Faria, Johannesson, and Stankowski 2021), and failure to replicate one study is not sufficient cause to question the growing consensus that ecological speciation and speciation with gene flow play an important role in generating marine biodiversity. Likewise, there is an abundance of evidence that allopatry has also promoted speciation in marine settings (Wainwright et al 2018; Ekimova et al 2019; Chenuil et al 2018; Holt et al 2020; Laakkonen et al 2021). We should not be surprised that in such a species-rich and unique environment there is evidence for a variety of speciation mechanisms.…”
