Diet dynamics of the juvenile piscivorous fish community in Spirit Lake, Iowa, USA, 1997–1998

Abstract: – We assessed temporal dynamics and variation among species and age‐classes in the diets of age 0 and age 1 piscivorous fish species in Spirit Lake, Iowa, USA during 1997 and 1998. Species included walleye Stizostedion vitreum, yellow perch Perca flavescens, smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieui, largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides, black crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus and white bass Morone chrysops. Thirty taxa were identified in diets, including 12 species of fish. We found dramatic differences in diets am… Show more

“…Population dynamics.-We used data from Pelham (2000) and Pelham et al (2001) to determine within-lake distributions of the six piscivorous species in Spirit Lake, which in turn determined our approach for estimating population sizes from beach seining. Pelham (2000) sampled the offshore zone at night from May to September 1998 using a semiballoon otter trawl (Hayes et al 1996) with a 7.9-m headrope, a 38-mm-mesh body, and a 6-mm-mesh cod end.…”

Trawling was done during the same weeks as littoral zone beach seining (Pierce et al 2001b), allowing a direct comparison of relative densities in the littoral zone versus offshore.…”

“…Cannibalism was observed in North Twin Lake among medium-and large-sized bass during August and September of 2004. Greater crawfish PBW weights (Morin andDumont 1994, Pelham et al 2001), and zooplankton dry weights were assumed to be 7% that of wet weights (Pelham et al 2001, Lawrence et al 1987. Wet weights were estimated for macroinvertebrates and zooplankton from length-weight regressions developed by Smock (1980) and Dumont et al (1975).…”

“…A value of 0 is least important and a value of 100 is most important. These data were then used to evaluate temporal consumption variability and ontogenetic differences (Berthou 2002, Pelham et al 2001.…”
