Diet of southern Buller's albatross (Diomedea bulleri bulleri) and the importance of fishery discards during chick rearing

Abstract: Southern Buller's albatrosses (Diomedea bulleri bulleri Rothschild) are frequently associated with fishing vessels off southern New Zealand, and may depend substantially on discards from fishing vessels, particularly trawlers, during chick rearing. To test this hypothesis, the diet was determined from 188 chick regurgitations collected at The Snares (May 1996, July 1996 and 1997) and Solander Island (May and July 1997). Fish (mostly discards but also some small species obtained naturally) was the dominant prey… Show more

“…zooplanktivores that seemed to lack obvious top predators themselves (Mianzan et al 2001). However, various animals are known to eat salps, such as sea lions (Childerhouse et al 2001), albatrosses (James and Stahl 2000), turtles (Van Nierop and Den Hartog 1984;Hatase et al 2002;Eckert 2006;Dodge et al 2011), fish (Lyle and Smith 1997;Morato et al 2000;Mianzan et al 2001), and krill (Kawaguchi and Takahashi 1996).…”

“…The period 1996-2004 was characterised by marked sea surface temperature anomalies in the New Zealand region associated with variations in the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) (e.g., Uddstrom & Oien 1999). The SOI has been correlated with squid abundance in the New Zealand region (Waluda et al 2004) and squid are an important component of the diet of Buller's albatross (James & Stahl 2000). Therefore, we assume that variations in the SOI indicate variations in the availability of squid for Buller's albatross.…”

“…Mollymawks are known to feed on jellyfish (Cnidaria), on comb jellies (Ctenophora), and particularly on tunicates such as salps (Tickell 1964, Cherel & Klages 1998, James & Stahl 2000. Such organisms often constitute a major component of the Southern Ocean macroplankton/ nekton community, and occur at the sea surface in very large numbers in the areas frequented by our instrumented birds (Pagès et al 1996).…”
