Dietary and Lifestyle Factors Associated with Gastric and Pancreatic Cancers: A Case-Control Study

Abstract: Gastric cancer (GC) and pancreatic cancer (PC) are the third and seventh most likely cancers to cause death worldwide. We aimed to determine the dietary and lifestyle factors of patients with GC or PC and their associated risk among Jordanians. This case-control study enrolled 587 adults (patients with PC, 101; patients with GC, 172; healthy controls, 314) between March 2015 and August 2018, who were assessed using interview-based personal and physical activity questionnaires. Multivariable logistic regression… Show more

“…Table 2 shows the characteristics of participants with GC (n = 172) and PC (n = 101) and controls (n = 314) as have been described by Al-Awwad et al [18] study. Participants with PC had similar age, height, and in-come as controls.…”

“…Potential confounders (adjusted for age, gender, BMI, smoking, marital status, total energy intake, education level, and physical activity) were chosen based on reported risk factors for PC. [17,18] Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a multinomial logistic regression model.…”

“…Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for GC were calculated using a multinomial logistic regression mode according to tertile of energy and energy adjusted macronutrient intakes, with the lowest tertile as the reference group. Potential confounders (age, gender, marital status, education, BMI, smoking, period of smoking, family history of gastric cancer, presence of gastric ulcer, and physical activity (MET-min/week)) were selected based on reported risk factors for GC in previous studies [36,43,44]. p-value for trend was calculated using linear logistic regression model.…”

“…The primary preventative measures are a healthy diet, H. pylori treatments, chemoprevention, and early detection testing. Dietary factors have a substantial impact on the development of stomach cancer [5]. Sporadic gastric cancer, early-onset gastric cancer, gastric stump cancer, and hereditary diffuse gastric cancer are the four types of stomach cancer (HDGC).…”
