Dietary fibre analysis

Abstract: Abbreviations: AOAC, Association of Official Analytical Chemists;HPAEC, high-performance anion-exchange chromatography;NDO, non-digestible oligosaccharides. The 'gold standard' method for the measurement of total dietary fibre is that of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (2000; method 985.29). This procedure has been modified to allow measurement of soluble and insoluble dietary fibre, and buffers employed have been improved. However, the recognition of the fact that non-digestible oligosaccharid… Show more

“…Dietary fibre is a mixture of substances derived from the structural materials of the plant cell wall and a range of non-structural polysaccharides either present naturally in foods or derived from food additives. Thoughts regarding fibre's impact on digestion and health are changing as knowledge on carbohydrate digestion develops (McCleary, 2003). Fibres can consist of one type of sugar units (homoglycans) or of several types of sugar units (heteroglycans).…”

“…The term dietary fibre, classified as soluble or insoluble, is described as the endogenous component of plant material in the diet that is resistant to human digestive enzymes (McCleary, 2003). KGM is water soluble and is one of the most viscous dietary fibres known, due to its high water-absorbing capacity.…”

“…Many procedures for the fractionation of the dietary fiber have been proposed in the last two decades [6][7][8][9]. These methods comply with the objective for dietary fiber determination to measure the content in foodstuffs; however, they are more expensive for the procedure of preparation of dietary fiber-rich products for industrial uses from the economical standpoint.…”
