Dietary interventions for rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: The effects of dietary manipulation, including vegetarian, Mediterranean, elemental and elimination diets, on rheumatoid arthritis are still uncertain due to the included studies being small, single trials with moderate to high risk of bias. Higher drop-out rates and weight loss in the groups with dietary manipulation indicate that potential adverse effects should not be ignored.

“…Unfortunately there is a dearth of robust evidence in human participants, with very few good-quality trials completed on diet supplementation to treat patients with chronic painful symptoms. 53,54 Pre-clinical findings suggest that dietary omega-3/ omega-6 ratio may have significance for inflammatory pain. Increasing omega-3 intake (found in fish) reduced patient-reported joint pain intensity, morning stiffness and the number of painful joints in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or joint pain secondary to inflammatory bowel disease.…”

“…Due to the clinical benefits observed in patients with RA during fasting or a Mediterranean diet [5,6] and due to the alterations of SCFA from the intestinal microflora during dietary interventions [10,17], we aimed to analyse the whole who had consented to participate in the study, regardless whether or not they gave a full set of data or adhered to the protocol. Missing values were replaced by carrying forward the last available observation.…”
