“…In some of them, the pattern was constructed a priori (3)(4)(5)(6)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)17,19,26,29,31) . More recently the definition of the dietary pattern was made a posteriori by mathematical procedures such as cluster analysis, principal components analysis, factor analysis and reduced rank regression (7,8,16,18,20,(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)30) . Both approaches provided similar findings when the pattern was tested against morbidity and/ or mortality, with benefits bound to characteristics defined as 'Mediterranean diets' or to the prevalence of plant foods over animal foods.…”

“…Thus, in this study, we addressed the effect of the CYP3A5 A6986G polymorphism on blood pressure in Japanese. As the Japanese diet is characterized by a high consumption of salt, 12 we considered dietary salt intake as a potential modification factor when investigating the effect of genetic factor on blood pressure.…”

“…Most of the studies that examined relationships of smoking status and a posteriori patterns with CVDs were in the United States and Europe [65,[87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95][96][97]. Three cross-sectional studies evaluated the interrelationships of dietary patterns and smoking status with subclinical CVD and hypertension [87][88][89].…”

“…To elucidate the relationships, nine studies prospectively assessed the associations of empirical patterns and smoking status on subclinical heart disease, CAD, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality [65,[90][91][92][93][94][95][96][97] (Table 2). Stratified analyses were conducted based on a priori hypotheses in three studies [90,92,93].…”
