Dietary patterns and hearing loss in older men enrolled in the Caerphilly Study

Abstract: The association between dietary patterns (DP) and prevalence of hearing loss in men enrolled in the Caerphilly Prospective Study was investigated. During 1979During -1983, the study recruited 2512 men aged 45-59 years. At baseline, dietary data were collected using a semiquantitative FFQ, and a 7-d weighed food intake (WI) in a 30 % subsample. Five years later, pure-tone unaided audiometric threshold was assessed at 0·5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz. Principal component analysis (PCA) identified three DP and multiple logis… Show more

“…In another population‐based study, 178 a significant relationship was found between overall dietary quality (measured by a healthy eating index) and hearing thresholds. The findings of other studies also demonstrate the protective role of healthier dietary patterns, 179–182 coffee, 183 moderate alcohol consumption, 184 folic acid supplementation, 185 and dietary vitamin A, vitamin E, 186 and vitamin C intake 187 against hearing loss in middle‐aged and older adults. Overall, the evidence reviewed here suggests that improper nutrition could affect the relationship between ARHL and cognitive decline, and nutritional interventions may help to slow down both hearing loss and cognitive decline 188 …”

“…Although we adjusted our analyses for ethnicity, education level, and reaction time, as proxies for language capacity and cognitive function, it is unclear how much our results are determined by these circumstances instead of for the net association between diet quality and the capacity to listening in noise. Strengths of this study are a prospective design with a very large sample size that, unlike most previous studies (Curhan et al 2018;Gallagher et al 2019;Curhan et al 2020), included both men and women. In addition, we used an auditory test that focuses on hearing function and human communication, which is highly clinically relevant.…”
