Dietary Plant Polysaccharides for Cancer Prevention: Role of Immune Cells and Gut Microbiota, Challenges and Perspectives

Abstract: Dietary plant polysaccharides, one of the main sources of natural polysaccharides, possess significant cancer prevention activity and potential development value in the food and medicine fields. The anti-tumor mechanisms of plant polysaccharides are mainly elaborated from three perspectives: enhancing immunoregulation, inhibiting tumor cell growth and inhibiting tumor cell invasion and metastasis. The immune system plays a key role in cancer progression, and immunomodulation is considered a significant pathway… Show more

“…ESP greatly improved the CIA-induced gut microbiota imbalance in the mice. Activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway is associated with the in vitro immunomodulatory effects of polysaccharides ( Wang et al, 2023a ; Wang et al, 2023b ). TLR4 expression activates the NF-κB pathway, thereby stimulating the release of inflammatory enzymes ( Chang et al, 2024 ).…”

“…Dietary fibers undergo fermentation by the gut microbiota, resulting in the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid. These SCFAs regulate the phenotype and/or function of macrophages, neutrophils, dendritic cells, and CD4 + T cells ( Wang et al, 2023a ).…”

“…In addition, polysaccharides such as chitin and chitosan, which are proteoglycan analogs, are being developed for use in medical devices [200,201]. In addition, polysaccharides such as dextran produced by microorganisms have long been used in infusions as plasma expanders, and polysaccharides derived from plants are used in anticancer drugs and healthy foods [202][203][204].…”

“…In recent years, there has been a growing body of evidence showing the antitumor bioactivity of natural polysaccharides in adjuvant therapy and chemoprevention is very notable [ 56 , 57 ]. Natural polysaccharides are widely present in animals, plants, and traditional Chinese medicines [ [58] , [59] , [60] , [61] , [62] ]. They are high-molecular-weight polymers formed by the linkage of aldehyde and ketone groups through glycosidic bonds.…”
