Dietary Quality and Relationships with Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) among United States Adults, Results from NHANES 2017–2018

Abstract: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a new definition for the evidence of hepatic steatosis and metabolic dysfunctions. The specific role of the dietary factors in the development and progress of the disease are not well illuminated. Thus, we conducted this study on the associations between dietary quality assessed by five dietary quality indexes (Dietary Inflammatory Index, DII; Mediterranean diet, MED; Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, DASH; Alternate Healthy Eating Index diet… Show more

“…Educational attainment was categorized as either high school or lower, or higher than high school. Serum cotinine levels were used to categorize smoking into three tiers: minimal (<0.015 ng/mL), moderate (0.015-3 ng/mL), and significant (≥3 ng/mL) ( 36 38 ). Two 24-hour dietary recalls were used to gather information on daily alcohol consumption, and alcohol consumption was categorized as either never or having a drinking behavior ( 37 ).…”

“…Based on education level, the patients were divided into less than high school, high school, and more than high school groups ( 22 ). Family income was assessed using the poverty income ratio (PIR), and the patients were classified into low-income (PIR < 1.30), middle-income (1.3 ≤ PIR < 3.5), and high-income (PIR ≥3.5) groups ( 23 ). Based on smoking status, the patients were divided into non-smoker (smoked less than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime) and smoker (smoked more than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime) groups.…”

“…Notably, this cycle of NHANES introduced the assessment of liver function using ultrasound and vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) for the first time. Liver steatosis was determined using a median Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP), while liver fibrosis was defined based on a median Liver Stiffness Measurement (LSM) 18 . The survey methodology included structured household interviews, which provided self-reported demographic data and medical records.…”
