In our present study, we observed the effect of cricket meal (CM) on disease resistance of African catfish. Fish were fed diets containing 350 g kg–1 and 400 g kg–1 of CM and 350 g kg–1 of fishmeal as control. The fish were divided into triplicates treatments of ten fish per replicate, weighed 22.5±0.6 g and fed with experimental diets for 40 days before being challenged against Aeromonas hydrophila. Relative percentage of survival (RPS) was recorded over 12 days post-challenge. White blood cell count, total protein, globulin and lysozyme showed significantly increasing levels in those fed with cricket meal diet compared to the control group. Mortalities at 12-day post-challenge significantly decreased to 30% (RPS: 66.7%) and 27% (RPS: 70%) for 35% and 40% CM respectively compared to 90% mortality in control group. Intestines and liver tissues of infected fish were dissected for pathogenic confirmation. The intestines of control diet showed the highest bacterial load (58.2×107 cfu g–1) compared to CM diets. The current study indicates that dietary CM could enhance the innate immune system and disease resistance of African catfish.

-This study was conducted to evaluate the inclusion of two levels (2.5 e 5.0%) of dried yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and its by-products, disrupted yeast cells and yeast cell wall in diets for juveniles of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus).Production performance, body and plasmatic composition indexes were evaluated. Seven isoproteic (26% digestible protein) and isoenergetic (3.100 kcal digestible energy) diets were formulated containing increased levels of each ingredient. The diets were supplied for 86 days, "ad libitum". Yeast and by-products increase feed efficiency and protein use, when compared to the control diet. Carcass composition and plasmatic (glucose, cortisol, uric acid, urea and plasmatic protein) levels are not affected by the test ingredient supplementation.Key Words: Piaractus mesopotamicus, pre-biotic, production performance, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, yeast by-products Níveis de levedura e derivados na dieta de juvenis de pacuRESUMO -Este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos da suplementação de dois níveis (2,5 e 5,0%) de levedura íntegra desidratada (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) e seus derivados, autolisado e parede celular, em dietas para juvenis de pacu (11,98 g e 8,5 cm). Foram avaliados o desempenho produtivo, a composição corporal e os parâmetros plasmáticos de juvenis de pacu. Utilizaram-se sete dietas isoproteicas (26% de proteína digestível por kg de ração) e isoenergéticas (3.100 kcal de energia digestível por kg de ração), cada uma com um nível de cada ingrediente-teste e mais uma dieta controle (sem adição de levedura). A suplementação da levedura e de derivados realizada durante 86 dias melhorou a eficiência alimentar e a utilização proteica pelos juvenis de pacu em comparação à dieta sem adição desses ingredientes.A composição de carcaça e os níveis plasmáticos (ureia, ácido úrico, proteína, cortisol e glicose) não são afetados pela suplementação dos ingredientes-teste.Palavras-chave: derivados de levedura, desempenho produtivo, Piaractus mesopotamicus, prebiótico, Saccharomyces cerevisiae Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia

Aims: To determine the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for the prevention of infection by Aeromonas hydrophila in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) fingerlings. Methods and Results: Rainbow trout fingerlings were fed with 0 mg (= controls), 1·875 mg, 3·75 mg, 7·5 mg and 15 mg of LPS per 100 g of commercial feed for 14 days before experimental challenge with A. hydrophila. The results revealed a reduction in mortalities to 5% in the two lowest doses and 15% in the group, which received 15 mg LPS per 100 g of feed, compared with 45% mortalities in the control. LPS exerted a powerful oxidative burst effect and was a potent mediator of phagocytic, lysozyme, bactericidal and antiprotease activities and total protein. However, whereas there were increases in specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) in LPS‐treated fish, the data were not significantly (P > 0·05) different. Conclusions: LPS was effective at preventing disease caused by A. hydrophila and in stimulating the innate immune response of rainbow trout. Significance and Impact of the Study: The results of this study highlight the role of LPS in fish disease control.
