Differences between primary peritoneal serous carcinoma and advanced serous ovarian carcinoma: a study based on the SEER database

Abstract: Objective This study aimed to compare clinical features and overall survival (OS) between patients with primary peritoneal serous carcinoma (PPSC) and those with advanced serous ovarian carcinoma (ASOC) and to identify prognostic factors. Methods Patients diagnosed with PPSC and ASOC from 2010 to 2015 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were enrolled. Pearson’s chi-square test was used to compare clinical features. … Show more

“…The training cohort (n=2935) was used to screen variables, establish the predictive model and develop the nomogram, while the validation cohort (n=1257) was used to validate the results of the training cohort. The potential predictors derived from the previous forecasting study in literature 17 18. Both cohorts included the same variables selected from SEER: age (<50, 50–70 and >70), ethnicity, marital status, tumour size, grade, laterality, surgery type, T stage in the eighth edition AJCC system, M stage in the eighth edition AJCC system, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and LODDS.…”

“…Primary Peritoneal Serous Carcinoma-Figure S15 It occurs in women, predominantly postmenopausal, and is challenging to diagnose as it resembles advanced epithelial ovarian carcinoma (AEOC), both in imaging and in the histological exam. It occurs less frequently than AEOC and has a worse prognosis [66]. The distinguishing features are the sparing of the ovaries or the disproportionate burden of extra-ovarian disease compared to the ovarian involvement [67].…”
