Differences in Classroom Engagement of Asian American Engineering Students

Abstract: Background Asian American experiences have been largely ignored in the engineering education research literature. Asian Americans are often considered as a homogenous group, despite including over 40 different ethnic subgroups who speak over 300 languages. The immigrant trajectories, cultural experiences, and college completion rates of Asian Americans also vary. Purpose This study compares classroom engagement of Asian American subgroups whose members are undergraduate engineering majors, and next examines th… Show more

“…More broadly, Ng, Lee, and Pak (2007) surveyed how Asian Americans are portrayed in K-12 education research, Teranishi et al (2009) called for the use of critical race theory in research on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in higher education, and Poon et al (2015) conducted a critical review of the model minority myth (MMM) in higher education research. This work, however, has not focused on STEM specifically, and research on Asian(Americans) in STEM is sparse (Ing and Victorino 2016). Outside of education, historians, sociologists, ethnic studies scholars, and legal scholars have written extensively about the racialization of Asian Americans (e.g.…”

“…For example, Asian scholars are under-represented in Ecology even as they appear over-represented in S&E [ 33 ]. The category ‘Asian’ is incredibly broad, masking a huge amount of diversity itself [ 34 ]; different scholars having very different experiences based on cultural background and history [ 35 ]. Adopting an intersectional perspective will almost certainly change our understanding of representation [ 36 ], with many axes of identity (e.g.…”

“…Of these items, five items were included in this study that measured student participation in the classroom and interactions with instructors and other students (Table 1). These items have been shown to measure a single factor of classroom engagement using a different sample of students (Ing & Victorino, 2016). The response options for each item indicated the frequency of the specific type of engagement ranging from 1 ( never ) to 6 ( very often ).…”
