Differences in Clinical Outcomes between Patients with and without Hypoglycemia during Hospitalization: A Retrospective Study Using Real-World Evidence

Abstract: Background Some patients admitted to hospitals for glycemic control experience hypoglycemia despite regular meals and despite adhering to standard blood glucose control protocols. Different factors can have a negative impact on blood glucose control and prognosis after discharge. This study investigated risk factors for hypoglycemia and its effects on glycemic control during the hospitalization of patients in the general ward. Methods This retrospective study included p… Show more

“…An increase in hypoglycemia severity has a negative impact on health‐related quality of life and overall healthcare resource use, including costs 5 , 6 . More importantly, the clinical significance of SH is that it is closely associated with an increased risk for subsequent cardiovascular (CV) outcomes and mortality in people with type 2 diabetes 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 .…”

“… 4 5 6 7 However, the security measures required for EMR data are becoming more stringent to protect patients' privacy. 6 8 As data security increases, the utilization of data inevitably decreases. It is almost impossible to obtain written consent when performing big data research; instead, we have to de-identify “personally identifiable information.” 9 10 In terms of de-identification, a major controversy exists regarding the use of personally identifiable information for an analysis.…”

“…In the article entitled, "Differences in clinical outcomes between patients with and without hypoglycemia during hospitalization: a retrospective study using real-world evidence, " by Lee et al [9], the authors report an evaluation of the risk factors for and the effects of hypoglycemia. The risk factors for hypoglycemia during hospitalization were found to be old age, low body mass index, female sex, and the use of premix insulin.…”
